Kim represented Germany at WorldSkills 2024 in Lyon. In preparation for this championship, she worked closely with mentor Björn Kroner. It was an intense process focused on concentration, technique, and conceptual thinking. This led to a new joint project, resulting in An Italian Dream. Not a competition floral arrangement, but a free interpretation of everything that had been built up along the way.
The inspiration for this Masterpieces work naturally comes from Italy. Not only as the country of origin of the products used, but above all as an experience. San Remo, La Dolce Vita, coming together, the rhythm of life, and the attention to beauty form the starting point for the content. Kim and Björn translated that atmosphere into a striking cloud, in which flowers seem to spring out of the construction.
The concept also includes a classic reference: Aphrodite, symbol of beauty and elegance. This combination of mythical layers and contemporary design strikes a balance between dream and reality. The work feels light and playful, but at the same time is technically well thought out and precisely executed.
For An Italian Dream, the two worked with flowers of Italian origin and in season. Ranunculus, carnations, calendula, anemones, agapanthus, and other spring products define the look.
The choice of these products was not only aesthetic, but also substantive: the Italian season runs from February to April/May and is known for its fresh, compact quality and bright colors. This brings the project in line with the practice of florists, for whom availability and seasonality are becoming increasingly important.
The film follows the creative process from Kim's perspective. She takes the viewer along on her train of thought: from initial associations to the final result. The cloud-shaped construction is made up of paper flowers on a frame based on a gutter cleaning system. An unexpected but powerful choice, precisely because of its simplicity and reusability.
This construction is an integral part of the design. It determines how the flowers move, how space is experienced, and how light plays through the work. The result is a composition that is not fixed, but breathes and changes depending on the viewing angle and the incidence of light.
What characterizes An Italian Dream is the naturalness of the collaboration. Kim and Björn build on a shared language that developed during their previous projects. Ideas are not explained, but complemented. Technique and emotion reinforce each other, without one taking precedence over the other.
Masterpieces is not about displaying products, but about telling a story that combines origin, craftsmanship, and inspiration. This project shows how a creative idea can be linked to the reality of the profession: seasonal work, thoughtful material choices, and attention to manufacturability.
An Italian Dream invites us to look beyond the final image. To the process, to the origin of materials, and to the collaboration needed to reach this level. It is a project that not only inspires but also encourages reflection: on how ideas arise and how they can be translated into our own practice.
