In Full Bloom: The Floral Identity of The Dorchester

At London’s The Dorchester hotel, flowers are not just “the finishing touch.” From the monumental vases along The Promenade to the bouquets in the hotel rooms, the floral arrangements are woven into the hotel’s visual identity. The man who shapes this identity is Phil Hammond. He joined The Dorchester at the age of 22 and, two years later, became the youngest designer florist the hotel had ever hired.

“The first thing florists usually think of is color. But texture determines how a design is truly experienced.” With that statement, French floral designer Frédéric Dupré sets the tone for his five-day seminar, “Texture & Color,” at the Boerma Institute. According to him, texture still receives too little attention in the art of floral design, even though it is precisely the combination of texture, color, and light that determines how a design comes across.
