A picking garden will be created with approximately 50,000 tulips, where visitors can pick their own bouquet for free from 12:00 PM. The theme of this day is 'Der Frühling kommt nach Berlin'. The official opening will be performed by Hester Somsen, the Dutch ambassador to Germany.
Tulips in the heart of Berlin
According to Arjan Smit, TPN chairman and tulip grower from Spierdijk, it has long been a wish to organize Tulip Day in Germany as well. “Germany is the most important export country for the Dutch tulip. Thanks in part to the Dutch embassy, this is now possible. The city of Berlin also responded enthusiastically and granted the necessary permits. The location, right in front of the Gedächtniskirche, is a real prime location. We can't wait to introduce Germany to the positivity and cheerfulness of our tulips. We are ready – and so are our tulips!”
Growing impact
Earlier, small-scale tulip campaigns have been held in Berlin, such as the collaboration with Flower Council Holland in 2018, where cargo bikes with mobile picking gardens drove through the city. The picking garden on March 15 focuses on a wider audience and wants to make thousands of people happy. "This first year we expect around four to five thousand visitors," says Smit. "Hopefully the event will grow into a success like in Amsterdam, with tens of thousands of visitors in a few years. Tulips bring us an incredible amount of energy and we want to share that passion with the German public."
