There will be a picking garden with about 50,000 tulips, where visitors can pick their own bunch for free starting at noon. The theme of the day is "Der Frühling kommt nach Berlin. The official opening will be performed by Hester Somsen, the Dutch ambassador to Germany.
Tulips in the heart of Berlin
According to Arjan Smit, TPN chairman and tulip grower from Spierdijk, it has long been a wish to organize Tulip Day in Germany as well. "Germany is the most important export country for the Dutch tulip. Thanks in part to the Dutch embassy, this is now possible. The city of Berlin also responded enthusiastically and has granted the necessary permits. The location, right in front of the Gedächtniskirche, is a real top spot. We can't wait to introduce Germany to the positivity and cheerfulness of our tulips. We are ready - and so are our tulips!"
Growing impact
Previously, small-scale tulip campaigns have been held in Berlin, such as the 2018 collaboration with Flower Council Holland , where cargo bikes with mobile picking gardens drove around the city. The picking garden on March 15 targets a wider audience and aims to make thousands of people happy. "This first year we expect about four to five thousand visitors," Smit said. "Hopefully the event will grow into a success like Amsterdam's, with tens of thousands of visitors in a few years. Tulips bring us incredible energy and we want to share that passion with the German public."
