Arcen Castle Gardens opens largest 'Stumpery Garden' in the Netherlands

Kasteeltuinen Arcen will open a new themed garden at the end of May: the Varenvallei (Fern Valley). This is the largest so-called 'Stumpery Garden' in the Netherlands. This garden is decorated with more than two hundred fern species, combined with reused tree roots and stumps, creating a playful and mysterious atmosphere.

The Fern Valley was designed by former head gardener Hay Lintjens and forms a combination of landscape architecture, biodiversity and circular use of materials. During the construction, trees were reused that had previously been cut down due to the construction of a dike along the Maas. As a result, the garden is not only a visual spectacle, but also a valuable biotope for insects, fungi and other shade-loving species.

The opening will be celebrated with a special program during the Ascension weekend (May 29 to June 1). Visitors can, among other things, plant their own fern, get advice from the Dutch Fern Association, enjoy live music by the Gardeniers and street theater in the park.

The Fern Valley also refers to the 19th-century 'Fern Craze' – a fern craze in which the ornamental plant grew into a true hype, similar to the tulip or hyacinth mania. In this garden, visitors can relive a botanical passion that once adorned gardens, tableware and interiors.
