Kasteeltuinen Arcen opens largest 'Stumpery Garden' in the Netherlands

At the end of May, Kasteeltuinen Arcen will open a new theme garden: the Varenvallei. This is the largest so-called 'Stumpery Garden' in the Netherlands. This garden is decorated with more than two hundred fern species, combined with reused tree roots and stumps, creating a playful and mysterious atmosphere.

Designed by former gardener Hay Lintjens, the Varenvallei is a combination of landscape architecture, biodiversity and circular use of materials. In its construction, trees were reused that were previously cut down due to the construction of a dike along the Meuse River. This makes the garden not only a visual spectacle, but also a valuable biotope for insects, fungi and other shade-loving species.

The opening will be celebrated with a special program during the Ascension weekend (May 29-June 1). Among other things, visitors can pot a boat of their own, get advice from the Dutch Boating Association, enjoy live music by the Gardeniers and street theater in the park.

The Fern Valley also refers to the 19th-century "Fern Craze" - a fern craze in which the ornamental plant grew into a veritable hype, similar to tulip or hyacinth mania. In this garden, visitors relive a botanical passion that once graced gardens, tableware and interiors.
